The St. Georges Market

Constructed in the 1830s to replace the market at Town Hall. In the 1800s the Parish of St. George’s had the largest population of black people on the island and the St. George’s Market was particularly important to Blacks as it gave them an outlet for their produce and the opportunity to earn an income.

The market was moved to another location in the 1870s and Nicolas McCallan operated a grocery store at the site. In the 1920s, the old market building became a tavern and restaurant. The building was converted to pubic restrooms in the 1980s.
